Rent a Mum – providing inspirational support to grownups

Who are we doing this for?

We are a cohort of individuals highly trained in talking therapies willing to walk out of our traditional therapy rooms and meet with you to offer our support when you need it.

We want to reach out to those of you that feel the process of full counselling is not right for you, at least not right now. Maybe you feel your issues are not important enough or that you just don’t have the time. You may fear the stigma that unfortunately can still affect our careers if we seem to admit we feel stressed. For all these reasons and more we at Rent a Mum feel we need to be more flexible and meet your needs halfway.  So without the need of referral from your Doctor, with the decision completely in your hands, you can arrange to meet with one of our ‘Mums’. If you can snatch an hour for lunch, have some flexibility with your working hours, why not meet up with one of our ‘Mum’ in your local coffee shop, or take a stroll, in much the same way as you might meet up with a great mum or supportive friend. Only this time will be spent with the focus on you and your needs only. Our professionals can offer you their support and attention in a way we term ‘Light Touch’ talking therapy. This is not full counselling or psychotherapy but it can be just the right degree of light support you need.

What is ‘Light Touch’ talking therapy?

Most counselling and psychotherapy approaches are built on a base of facilitative conditions that help people communicate in the best way possible. These conditions are the fundamental ways of connection that professionals bring to the theraputic relationship. You may recognise these conditions, if you’ve ever had a feeling of being deeply understood and accepted by someone, felt that you could share and explore things about yourself without fear of judgement or criticism and had a strong sense of their  honesty and compassion.  For many counsellors the focus on deepening and strengthening their core values or way of being in these areas is a continuing part of their practise development, it goes hand in hand with the other continuing professional development most assign to .  When we communicate with these conditions in place what takes place can be the springboard to so many solutions to issues that just seem to hang around weighing us down. If you, like many others know yourself as resourceful and capable, its common to feel you can manage these burdens indefinitely, sweep them under the carpet, bury them away. You may feel that talking them through is not that important, that you can live without the input of anyone else. Take a moment to consider the analogy of an imaginary backpack one that you put on every morning as you open your eyes before beginning your day. The backpack is filled with our cares and woes, memories and fears. More arrive day by day getting heavier as time moves on. Sure, we empty some of the issues out along the way but, almost unnoticed, incrementally it gets heavier.  Years down the line you look back and see just how much that back pack has weighed you down and held you back from the great life you had imagined for yourself. Yet find a way to lighten the load on a regular basis and you literally have the energy to skip through life again – experience life just as you intended it to be.

In summary Rent a Mum – Inspirational Support for Grownups exists to match up experts (we like to call them our MUMS) who can offer emotional support, mentorship and befriending to people who wish to engage an experienced qualified professional for one to one support, but who feel they do not necessarily require the full theoretical or analytical skills of a counsellor, psychotherapist or other similarly qualified professional. People who choose to Rent a Mum want the safety, confidentiality and the supportive experience that seeing a professional can provide, plus a less formal structure more focused on the supportive nature of the helping relationship.
